How Stats Transformed my Tournament

I played a tournament earlier in the year. Having not played for a couple of weeks leading up to the event due to wintry conditions here in the UK, I took to my stats to try and figure out the best game plan that I could come up with to best represent my game.

And using my shot scope data, I found that one of my main strengths in tournament golf is hitting greens in regulation. For me, and for most golfers, there is a direct correlation with shooting lower scores when you hit more greens in regulation.

I went out with one game plan in mind whilst participating in the Skillest Proam in Dubai.

Ignore the pin. Hit the middle of the green.

It led to an opening round of 68 around the incredible Yas Links Golf Club, which is the host of the Abu Dhabi Championship on the DP World Tour.

It could have been so much better because on holes 9 and 18, I made two ridiculous three-putts.

But one thing that didn't waver for the whole day was my stubbornness to only attack the middle of the green from 1 to 18.

Now, of course, I didn't hit the middle of the green. Sometimes I was long, sometimes short, sometimes left, sometimes right.

And with those misses, sometimes I was closer to the pin than expected, and other times further away than expected.

Not chasing flags and not chasing birdies took the pressure off my approach shots. But most importantly, help me score really well.

The confidence from this first round meant I followed it up with rounds of 72 and 67. Only to fall short in the final round with a 77, but overall, an under-par week from a very simple strategy

The Transition

Happy Friday! If you’ve tried Pete Cowen’s spinning arm drill, you’ll know the idea: rotate the trail forearm to get the club working in the right direction. It’s a great drill, but a lot of golfers I coach can’t quite feel it. They end up confused about what their arms should be doing. So in this week’s video I show you an alternative: the motorcycle drill. Instead of thinking about your trail forearm, you focus on your lead wrist. You put it into more flexion, like revving a motorcycle...

Hi,I know you work hard on your game and gather your distances and I also know it’s frustrating when your performance on the course doesn’t improve. Greens in regulation don’t increase or distance from the pin doesn’t get closer. My question to you today is - Do you know your CARRY distances? You might think you hit your 7-iron 170 yards. But do you actually know your average carry distance? Do you know your gapping? Or which club is costing you the most shots around the greens?Often Golf is...

Spine angle faults in the golf swing

Hey. I hope you've had a great week of practice. Let's hope that practice can be rewarded with a good round of golf this weekend. In a recent YouTube video I posted, I showed the effects of poor spine angle control. One of the most common faults that I see in my lessons is the lack of understanding of the spine angle, not only at setup but throughout the golf swing. Many golfers actually correct this during the swing and can get into a decent impact position. However, the constant change of...
